Chiles realized that Atlanta was lacking a comedy club where comedians could showcase their talents in front of diverse audiences. He also noticed that most of the popular comedy clubs catered exclusively to big-name performers, leaving little room for upcoming comedians to perform. This lack of opportunity presented a challenge for comedians who were trying to break into the industry, so Chiles decided to step up and do something about it.
With little knowledge and experience in running a comedy club, Chiles took up the challenge and opened Laughing Skull Lounge with financial backing from friends and family. The club was initially housed in the back of a bar called The Vortex on Peachtree Street, with only ten tables that could accommodate about 80 people.
The Early Days
As with any new venture, there were initial challenges that Laughing Skull had to confront. One of them was that it was difficult at first to attract an audience since most people were not aware of its existence. The other challenge was that not many comedians wanted to perform at an unknown club. Despite these challenges, Chiles and his team remained optimistic and remained steadfast in their mission.
To attract more performers, Chiles contacted his comedian friends in other regions and asked them to recommend fellow comedians who would be interested in performing at Laughing Skull. Word soon spread, and gradually more comedians started coming in to perform at the club. The club’s reputation slowly grew, and it started becoming a popular spot for comedians and comedy enthusiasts alike.
The Birth of the Comedy Festival
In 2010, just one year after it opened its doors, Laughing Skull made history by launching the Atlanta Comedy Festival, an annual comedy event that brings together some of the best comedians from all over the world. The festival was created with the intention of further expanding Laughing Skull’s reputation as a premier comedy club in Atlanta.
The festival was an instant hit, attracting both local and international comedians that wanted to showcase their talents to a wider audience. Over time, the festival has grown in reputation and magnitude, attracting comedians like Margaret Cho, Gilbert Gottfried, Tracy Morgan, Hannibal Buress, Michael Ian Black, and many more talented performers.
Moving To A New Location
As Laughing Skull continued to grow in stature, it quickly outgrew its original location at The Vortex. In 2015 Marshall Chiles decided that it was time to move to a bigger location that could accommodate more audiences as well as offer better opportunities for comedians.
The search for a new location took some time but eventually led to a former church building located on Peachtree Street in Midtown Atlanta. Chiles negotiated with the owners of the property and secured a lease agreement that allowed him to renovate the building and convert it into a state-of-the-art comedy club.
The new location opened later that same year with enhanced facilities, improved sound systems and lighting. With a seating capacity of more than 250 people (the space also doubles as an events center), the new venue provided ample space for both attendees and performers.
Laughing Skull Today
Today, Laughing Skull Lounge continues to be one of the best comedy clubs in the country. It is renowned for its commitment to nurturing and promoting emerging comedians and has become a training ground for young comedians looking to break into the industry.
Many of the comedians who have performed at Laughing Skull have gone on to achieve great things in their careers. For example, Michelle Buteau, who performed at the club in 2013, has since gone on to become a popular comedian and actress, featuring in shows like Key & Peele, The Eric Andre Show, and The Circle.
In recent years, Laughing Skull has also launched the 800 Pound Gorilla Records, a label that records and distributes high-quality comedy albums by some of today’s funniest comedians. This initiative has further cemented the club’s position as a major player in the entertainment industry.
